Pin Attempt - Halloween Pumpkin Carvings

Happy Halloween!! Can you believe it is already the end of October and Christmas stuff will be hitting the shelves at midnight tonight? Although I love Christmas, I'm not sure I'm ready for it to be here in two months. So, for today, I'll concentrate on Halloween and the pumpkins we carved last night - two of them are from a Pinterest pin I did a while back (found here). And I must say they (this pin attempt) turned out great... of course, I drew and I had the hubby carve out all the hard parts... so I can't take full credit!

Safe trick or treating tonight! And be sure to save your pie pumpkins... I will be sharing my fresh pumpkin and pumpkin pie recipes soon.

Popcorn Ball Recipe with Marshmallows

Mmm Mmm Good! My absolutely favorite part of Halloween is popcorn balls made with marshmallow. As a kid, there was a lady around the corner who we could always count on getting one from every year. A couple of years ago, I was taking my niece around Trick or Treating and we stopped at her house. A handful of candy was given out until she realized it was me. She quickly disappeared into the kitchen and came back with two popcorn balls - one for me! I was thrilled, I didn't expect any candy let alone a popcorn ball. It was like heaven and a little piece of childhood restored in me.

The next year, I didn't want to miss that great taste I always had… so I decided to make my own. And, without a doubt, they are still the greatest treat ever. So, I warn you now, they are very messy to make but well worth the taste. Here's the easy popcorn ball recipe made with marshmallow I dug out again this year and used:

Marshmallow Popcorn Ball Recipe

1/2 cup of un-popped popcorn kernels
6 tbsp butter (I used buttery becel)
5 cups of marshmallows (tiny ones are easier to work with)

Pop your popcorn! You may use a paper bag in the microwave, some oil in a pan on the stove or, what I did, a popcorn maker. When finished, put popped popcorn in a 9x13 pan. Be sure to avoid putting any un-popped kernels in with it. Next, melt the butter in a sauce pot on low heat. Once melted, add marshmallows and continue to stir until they are melted. Remove from heat and pour mixture over popcorn. Now, comes the messy part. Mix the marshmallow mixture and popcorn until coated well. Then, cover your hands in butter and form popcorn balls. The recipe I used says it will make 8, but depending on the popcorn that turns out, some batches only made 6.

Now enjoy! And, keep it quiet that you made them or else you'll have unexpected guests knocking at your door for some! :D

It's "Favorites Friday" | Pumpkin Inferno

We finally made it to Friday... and "Favorites Friday" at that. I'm breaking the rules today and not only picking five of my favorite things at Pumpkin Inferno, I'm showing you the pictures that turned out. Yes, I admit, I suck at taking pictures at night... I still need to learn what setting to use on the camera.

For those of you who don't know what Pumpkin Inferno is, it's a large display of pumpkins that are carved into many different things... And, usually multiple pumpkins put together to create one large scene. It's located at Upper Canada Village (Eastern Ontario) and last night we finally made our way down there. For those of you who do know what it is and are still planning on attending... HERE IS YOUR WARNING: you may not want to look at the rest of this post and save yourself for the surprise. Although I have only captured a few of the displays, I found that all of the posts on Facebook lately had revealed most of the pumpkins we saw. Now that I have made my disclaimer, here are just a few of the amazing displays:

Pumpkin Inferno - Pumpkin Carvings

Pumpkin Inferno - Mermaid

Pumpkin Inferno - Moose

Pumpkin Inferno - Dragonfly

Pumpkin Inferno - Skeleton Hand

Pumpkin Inferno - Cowboy

Pumpkin Inferno - Cowboy

Pumpkin Inferno - Soldier

Pumpkin Inferno - Chinese Lanterns

Pumpkin Inferno - Just Buried

Pumpkin Inferno - Owls

Pumpkin Inferno - Mother Nature

Absolutely amazing. I'm so glad we went and if you haven't - you must! It's incredible, especially knowing that students designed and carved all of the displays. Anyways, I have a busy girls night ahead of me with Magic Mike. I hope you have a great weekend!

What Oh What Color Should I Paint?

I need your help! I have this antique dresser that I used to love, but now in the new place I just don't feel the same about it. I have one last hope at rescuing my love for it before I sell it to a new home - change the color. It looked perfect in the cape cod foyer, the green color, dark woods and then this dresser. It's actually a deep purple outdoor paint that is used on decks and allows the grains to show through... but it usually looks more like brown. Here it is, remember?

Well, in the new place it just doesn't fit in. Although it nestles perfectly in between the wall and closet in the spare room, or should I say our nieces room. Here it is now, you can definitely see more of a purple color:

Now here's where you come in. I have very light grey walls and I want to do something that will add a punch of color to the room. Although, I may have to change the chair you see in the corner of the picture above. Here are the colors I was sort of thinking:

pinterest.

talk of the house.

pinterest.

martha stewart.

So, here you have it. A light creamy white, yellow or pale turquoise? I was also thinking maybe a darker shade of grey, or number 3, 4, 9 or 10. There are  just way too many colors to choose from. I even thought a nice lime green may look good. ERR! I'm helpless. So, do me a favor, write a quick response below and let me know what color I should choose. Please help restore the love I once had for the beautiful antique dresser.

A Pin Attempt or Two - Steak, Crab and Soup!

Welcome back Monday! Last night I begged and pleaded to be a stay at home wife, but for some reason the hubby didn't think that was a great idea. Well, needless to say, I made it through the day today and, I have three posts in one tonight... a pin attempt, or two, and a quick recipe that I haven't made in a while, perfect for a quick dinner when you're not in the mood to cook.

First up....

Pin Attempt - Sweet Potato Cauliflower Soup

As I mentioned a few weeks back, I've really been trying my best to eat healthy and as natural as possible... without getting too bored. So, when I was craving a soup for my lunch this week, I thought this would be the perfect recipe, found on Pinterest and taken from manifest vegan.

manifest vegan.

Sweet Potato Cauliflower Soup Recipe

1 Large Head of Cauliflower
Olive Oil for Drizzling
3 Medium to Large Sized Sweet Potatoes, Cut into 1" Cubes
1 Sweet Onion, Diced
2 Cloves of Garlic (I used 5!!)
7 Cups of Water

Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Cut the cauliflower into bit sized pieces, lay in a single layer on a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil. Put in the oven and let them roast until the tops are golden brown, but not mushy, roughly 20 to 30 minutes.

In the meantime, place sweet potatoes, onion, garlic and water in a large stockpot and bring to a boil. Simmer continuously until the sweet potatoes are tender. Add in cauliflower, remove from heat and let cool. Once cooled, divide soup into two parts, blend one half and then add back to the soup. (Makes 9 servings.)

Easy, healthy and quick to do. But, not my favorite. For some reason I can't get past the texture and it keeps reminding me of baby food. Now, it does taste okay, just a little bland, but a little salt and pepper will fix that. And... I must admit, it smells really good. So, how about a six or seven out of ten. Hey, give it a try... it may be the perfect soup for you.

Pin Attempt - How to Cook Steaks on Your Stovetop...

off the (meat) hook.

... that tastes better than any fancy restaurant. Found on Pinterest and taken from off the (meat) hook. This recipe is easy to do and, trust me, makes the most delicious steak you've ever tasted. Okay a little salty, but I absolutely loved it and would trade in the BBQ any day for this recipe.

Best Stovetop Steak Recipe

All you need is a good cut of steak, coarse sea salt and your favorite steak spice.

About an hour before you're ready to cook the steak, remove them from the fridge and sprinkle both sides with coarse sea salt, I ended up using coarse salt (maybe that is why it was so salty?). When you're ready to cook, heat a pan as hot as you can get it on the stove, some people use a cast iron pan, I used a regular old non-stick. While the pan is getting super hot, rinse the steaks off and add the seasoning you want for your steak. Now, get ready to cook.

Take a pair of tongs and hold a steak with the fat strip down on the pan. Let the fat burn to release grease and brown. Then, take your steaks and put them in the pan... cook until the side browns, flip and continue until the other side browns. The trick here is that the steak will continue to cook after you remove it from the heat. Trust me, I only cooked them for about 3 or 4 minutes per side and they were medium-rare. The trick is to stop one temperature before the one your want, i.e. stop at rare if you want medium rare. Let your steak rest for 5 - 10 minutes and then be prepared for the best steak ever. Okay, if I don't make sense... go here, it explains it all! MMM... You can thank me later :o)

Perfect Weekday Menu - Easy Buttery Crab Pasta

This recipe is mine, all mine. I kind of threw this together a few years ago... made it all of the time and forgot all about it. The other day when we were grocery shopping, I saw some crab meat and thought yes, easy buttery crab pasta is easy and perfect for a work night meal. Here's the recipe:

Easy Buttery Crab Pasta Recipe

1 Package of Crab Meat
1/2 Package of No Yolk Whole Wheat Pasta
5 Tsp Buttery Becel (or Butter)
Garlic Salt for Flavor

Boil a pot of water and add pasta. In the meantime, put a teaspoon of Buttery Becel in a frying pan, melt and add crab meat. Warm crab through and cook pasta until desired tenderness. Drain noodles, divide into two dishes, add two teaspoons of butter to each dish and add crab to each. Sprinkle with garlic salt until desired flavor. (Makes 2 Servings)

Easy-peasy! It takes roughly 10 - 15 minutes and it's absolutely delicious. One of my favorite week-night meals.

Okay, enough from me for one night. I think I've made up for my lack of blogging lately. Here's to food, pinterest and a quick rest of the work week. :o) Cheers!

A New Shoppe... How About Some Jewelry?

And we've already made it to Wednesday. That means the end of the work week is in sight and I've been dreaming about anything but working in the corporate world for the past few days. A couple of posts ago (It's "Favorites Friday" | Food and Such), I mentioned that I was interested in venturing into a little online shoppe - other than my Etsy one - which I do have some pieces ready to add to. :o) Anyways, I'm thinking of selling jewelry... but first I wanted to see what you thought. There is a lot to choose from, so I want to start off with costume jewelry and slowly add some silver pieces. Here a few of the pieces I was thinking:

bracelet.

necklaces.

rings.

scarf.

All very affordable - everything I've shown here is under $50! Any thoughts? Let me know below in the comments and hopefully I'll be selling them soon. Anyways, another busy night, trying to wrap up Assignment 1 of my university course and of course, watching Survivor. Talk soon!

Happy 100th Post!

What a way to start the week, with my 100th post. I was going to write a post filled with my future jewelery shoppe, when the hubby said... you must do a recap! (I guess someone has been reading my blog posts.) So I thought, ya that's a great idea, a little more work - as we're trying to get out the door after dinner for the night, but I will do it. So here goes, a recap of what I yammered on about for the last 100 posts:

1. My First Blog Post (November 14, 2011) - Looking back now, it's hard to believe that it all started with a short piece about me and a dream to achieve. I'm still working towards it but that reminder of what I was after gives me the "kick in the butt" I've been needing lately to get things rolling again! Just two short posts later (The Start of a New Business), I created my first product - hoping it would one day meet the world of Etsy.

2. For the rest of 2011, I introduced you to the hubby, began my "Favorites Friday" posts and we were starting to house shop once again, with the possibility of building. Who knew we would be where we are now - in another renovation, but still loving every minute of it.

I shared one of our favorite recipes - MMM... No Yeast Cinnamon Buns!

3. In January, I promised my pinning attempt once a week! What was I thinking? Okay, I'm sorry, I have failed at this... but I want to get back at it starting this week, in fact last night I successfully completed a pin attempt... I will have to share later! As well, the start of the year shared lots of interior photos, favorite items of mine and recipes... I was on a roll.

4. Let's not forget, I started to show you the before and after of the cape cod! And, as the hubby nicely reminded me tonight... I still need to finish sharing them!

My epic fail at making yarn covered earrings. (Pin Attempt - Paperclip Earrings)

5. In April, I took on a new logo design for a local photography company - Fine Photos Logo Design.  In my opinion it was a huge success and one of my favorite logos to date! I absolutely loved the challenge and had fun incorporating all of my client's ideas!

And, of course I shared The Best Pizza Dough Recipe Ever!
Which we will be trying shortly with whole wheat flour, so I'll let you know how it goes.

Looking back, I just fell in love with hundreds of items over again - did I ever tell you I am obsessed with interior design and furniture. Other than that, the rest of the season was quite a blur. I took the summer off because of absolute craziness in our lives and nicely just got back on here with you. But, I can say I'm proud that I have been able to stick to it for 100 posts and hopefully there are that and many more ahead. Here's to another 100 posts... and a thanks for sticking it through with me and giving me a reason to follow my dreams... Cheers!

It's "Favorites Friday" | Food and Such

Another "Favorite's Friday"... and since I've been so lazy at blogging this week, I knew I had to get something out to you. The truth is, I'm actually sitting here doing some "emergency" work for the corporate career, waiting for an email to get back to me so I can finish it up. So, I thought what better time to fill the empty pages of my blog... which, did I tell you I have 2050 views on!! Yay! Now if I could get people to write back to me I'd be super excited! Until then, it's a pretty lonely space filled with my babbling... :o)

Okay, one more thing before I cheat my way through a post... because I'm definitely sharing some Pinterest pics... <sorry!> Anyways, I was thinking of selling jewelry. I've done it before at my friend's spa (check it out - The Willow Wheat Spa) and I did well. I would order it in and instead of owning a store, she let me "rent" (free) some space to sell it. It was a way to fulfill my dream of having a store... by like 1%. Anyways I've been thinking for a while and searching the internet for some great pieces and have came across some more I'd like to sell, only this time I'm thinking of selling it online - more like a virtual store. So, what do you think? I will share the pics of them in a blog soon, I promise... and maybe you can let me know what you like / don't like. And hey, what the heck, maybe it will blossom into a beautiful thing... and I can finally work from home!

Okay, enough rambling, here's my favorites for this beautiful friday... which might I add had the quick appearance of snowflakes... Err! Here goes. My five favorite recipes I must try soon on the "food & drink." board, and might I say, I tried to choose the healthy ones:

Buffalo Chicken Rolls (recipe)
can you stay for dinner.
Baked Cheddar-Broccoli Rice Cups (recipe)
daydream kitchen.

Butternut Squash Stuffed Shells (recipe)
proud italian cook.

Sweet Potato Cauliflower Soup (recipe)
manifest vegan.

Triple Chocolate Chunk Muffin (recipe)
healthy is always better.

Let's eat. Of course I couldn't forget dessert... and they're made with apple sauce and greek yogurt... so go nuts! Okay just have one... anyways, everyone have a great weekend out there - try to stay warm.

Happy Monday?

Well, it was a Monday for me. After five days off, it's back to the grind. Ugh! There's nothing worse than reality hitting you smack in the face after a long weekend of family, friends, cooking, relaxing, watching movies... and ignoring all responsibilities whatsoever. But, I did accomplish one thing today - a list of blog posts that must happen soon! I am so bad at getting all of my posts to you that I promise, like the Before and Afters of the Cape Cod. They must be revealed before I can show you any of the renovations at the new house. Oh and might I say, I hope everyone in Canada had a great long weekend...

Anyways, as I recoup from a dose of reality today, here's a few pins that I've been eying up lately, okay they're from my "text." board, but still inspirational and hopefully enough to get my butt back into gear and getting my products on the etsy shoppe before Christmas! Enough babbling, hopefully you can find some inspiration or truth to some of these:

I absolutely love the last one! Live every day with intention. Now, I must go finish reading the rest of my advertising and promotions text book. Only three assignments and an exam away from being finished... and then I may never look at a school course again. Have a great rest of the week and hopefully you had a great Wednesday!
